What is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a mental health condition characterized by persistent, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions). Individuals with OCD often feel compelled to perform these rituals to alleviate the anxiety caused by their obsessions.

It's essential to recognize that OCD is a medical condition and not a personality quirk.

What are the symptoms of OCD?

People with OCD may experience intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that cause significant anxiety or discomfort. These thoughts can range from fears of contamination, harming others, or fears of making a mistake.

Compulsions are repetitive actions or mental processes that a person with OCD feels compelled to perform to reduce the anxiety caused by their obsessions. Examples include excessive hand washing, counting, or checking.

OCD can significantly interfere with daily activities, relationships, and overall quality of life. Individuals may find it challenging to concentrate on work or enjoy social interactions due to the distressing nature of their obsessions and the time-consuming nature of their compulsions.

How is OCD treated?

At Cornerstone Psychiatry, Rebecca understands the importance of a tailored treatment approach to address the unique needs of each individual struggling with OCD.
